The Escalation by the FDA
Although Wilhelm Reich and his patients reported astonishing therapeutic success and highly positive effects on the immune system, his research was radically rejected and attacked by the medical establishment.
Burning Books and Demolished Laboratories: What befell Wilhelm Reich in the 1950s is regarded today as one of the most chilling chapters in modern scientific history. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) branded his orgone research as outright fraud and launched an unprecedented campaign against him. In 1956, federal agents raided Wilhelm Reich's laboratories at Orgonon. Under court supervision, his orgone accumulators were literally smashed to pieces with axes. Yet the greatest shock was still to follow: Tons of irreplaceable scientific research notes, journals, and published books were confiscated and incinerated in New York City waste incinerators. It marked one of the few legally sanctioned book burnings in the history of the United States.
A Tragic End Behind Bars: Reich, fiercely convinced of having made a revolutionary breakthrough, steadfastly refused to debate scientific facts in a courtroom. He argued that a legal judge held no jurisdiction to pass judgment over the laws of nature. Sentenced to a two-year prison term for criminal contempt of court, the tragedy reached its culmination in November 1957: Wilhelm Reich died of heart failure in the federal penitentiary in Lewisburg — only days before his scheduled release on parole.
The unsolved mystery of life energy: To this day, the absolute brutality with which the authorities attempted to obliterate Reich's work raises many questions. Why was a supposedly ineffective wooden box destroyed with such legal and physical aggression? The systematic destruction of his empirical evidence makes it extremely difficult for today's research to fully reconstruct his biophysical experiments.
Nevertheless: Despite the unprecedented destruction of his life's work, Reich's knowledge could not be completely erased. Deep in the underground, his findings paved the way for completely new approaches in vibrational medicine.
